Naica, Chihuahua and Personal Update

Nestled in the arid heart of Chihuahua state, in the municipality of Saucillo, sits the small mining town of Naica. With only a few thousand residents, it might look like just another dusty desert outpost. Yet Naica carries two extraordinary claims to fame: it holds some of the largest natural crystals on Earth, and it is widely known as the “Witch Capital of the World.”

### Giants of the Earth: The Cave of Crystals

Deep beneath Naica lies the famous Cueva de los Cristales (Cave of Crystals), also called Cueva de las Espadas. Discovered during mining operations, the cave contains enormous selenite crystals—some reaching more than 10 meters long and a meter thick—formed over hundreds of thousands of years in extreme heat and humidity. The site is a geological marvel that has drawn scientists, explorers, and curious visitors from around the globe. The same mineral-rich ground that produced these glittering giants also made Naica one of Mexico’s major lead producers.

### Fireballs, Covens, and the Legend of the Witches

Alongside the scientific wonder runs a much darker local lore. Residents and visitors alike speak of mysterious fireballs that rise from the mines and caves after about 10 or 10:30 p.m. In Mexican folklore, floating balls of fire are often said to be witches in flight. In Naica the belief is especially strong: the witches are said to emerge from the underground tunnels, ride the night skies, and seek out young women and girls to recruit into their coven.

One of the best-known stories concerns a teenager named Monserrat who worked in a local bakery. After finishing her shift she walked to a nearby lake to watch the moonlight on the water, lost track of time, and never returned the same. Later sightings described her as gaunt and transformed—said to have been taken and changed by the witches. Similar tales warn that after dark the streets empty; people stay indoors rather than risk an encounter.

The town’s supernatural reputation exploded in the early 2000s. During a popular television program, a guest claiming knowledge of the occult declared that Naica was the global meeting place for witches, especially around October 31. The claim stuck. Today an archway at the entrance to town features a silhouette of a witch on a broomstick, and some mine entrances carry informal “Cave of the Witches” signs. On Halloween nights the streets are said to grow particularly quiet.

Whether one views the stories as living folklore, psychological responses to the eerie desert landscape and subterranean darkness, or something more, the legend has become inseparable from Naica’s identity. The crystals’ strange energy, the isolation of the mining community, and centuries of blended Indigenous and European beliefs about the supernatural all feed the myth.

Naica therefore offers a rare double experience: stand in awe of one of nature’s most spectacular mineral formations by day, and feel the weight of an enduring local legend by night.
