Located just west of Las Cruces, the town of Mesilla is loaded in history, as it was a frequent visiting area for the gunslinger Billy the Kid. The town also served as a legal seat before New Mexico became a state, with many of its founding buildings still standing. The famous restaurant La Posta is also a spot people visit frequently as it has some of the best food in the southwest. Near La Posta, the Double Eagle has served patrons for decades, and many activities happen in its town square. Many of its buildings are also known for their historical significance in the town but house many souvenir shops that visitors can visit and enjoy. Some contain beings that no longer belong to this world, and have refused to move on.
La Posta Restaurant
Located within Mesilla, New Mexico, this restaurant serves many individuals from all parts of the world with its New Mexican cuisine, ambiance, and iconic bird cage. While the establishment is filled with life and dining guests throughout the day, there is a dark secret within its walls. The establishment is known to have objects thrown at staff, poltergeist activity, smells of sulfur, and people being assaulted by an unknown entity. The spirits even torment the birds who are displayed at the entrance of the restaurant at random.
Billy the Kid gift shop
Formerly the county courthouse, this building has seen it all. It was witness to the Mexican-American war and the trial of the infamous gunslinger Billy the Kid. Here, Billy the Kid was sentenced to death over his troubles at Lincoln New Mexico and was sent there to hang. Billy the Kid then made his escape in Lincoln and fled to Fort Sumner, New Mexico, where he finally met his fate at the hands of Sheriff Pat Garrett. The specter of a man in cowboy gear, often purported to be Billy the Kid himself, is said to manifest in this shop and walk into walls.
Old Mesilla Cemetery
The cemetery may be home to another Llorona, which haunts the property at night, but she isn’t the only ghost there. The spirit of a witch is said to haunt a particular slab grave, and those who sit on it are destined for bad omen.
Fountain Theater
Formerly a theater, this locale now serves as a nonprofit venue for film and entertainment in Mesilla. One can enjoy watching an occasional show or film in this historical place, but the living aren’t the only ones inhabiting this venue. The spirit of an actress is said to be seen walking around the property and may also be spotted in frustration.
Double Eagle Restaurant
This luxurious restaurant is said to be the home of two specters who died tragically in a Romeo and Juliet type of tale. They are seen all around the property with the man sobbing over his loss. Poltergeist activity can also be witnessed in the property as well.
